Why Personal Agency is Important for Families and Education.
Personal Agency is an ability and a feeling that we can exercise positive choices in life for ourselves and our community. It is an important factor in realising personal well-being, and even a factor in the growth in intelligence. Agency contributes to our good mental health and is linked with positivity in motivation for ourselves and others. It is the building block of citizenship and for health and relationships. It is even connected with how our development can be related to the aspirations of others.
The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) recognise this personal characteristic as one of importance for individual and community development. They describe it as the ability and the 'will' for individuals to positively influence their own lives and the world around them. They recognise that it is a factor which can be a driving force for personal development and hence it is an influence on how education can have benefits for individuals and their community.
Personal Agency is an important outcome of the positive psychological synthesis of Will.
