Charter for Aspiring Learners
This applies from the youngest child in each nursery to the Director of Education, and to all those working in local authority and national educational institutions:
As a learner:
I have the entitlement of having a pleasant and stimulating learning environment which has consistency of procedures, and relationships of those around me who I can trust.
I am respected as an individual, no matter my age, gender, race or other characteristics.
I have opportunities to learn and participate with others;
I have opportunities to have degrees of freedom, to be able to have personal space, choice of activity and way of being.
I also respect the requirements of others for their space and will respect their needs.
I will respect the need for collective decisions which are the basis of joint trust.
I can expect that fairness and justice are essential for the enrichment of relationships.
I can expect to talk about and comment on the consequences of my actions
I am entitled to have support in my learning and have feedback about my learning related to myself as an individual and not in comparison with others.
I am respected when I make mistakes and I am welcomed when I say “I am stuck and do not understand".
I have entitlement to play a part in service to others and have a personal voice within the institution and community.
A Charter for Educators exploring 21st Century Education:
As an educator, I am distinctly different in my approach from an administrator, a manager or a quality inspector;
I am interested in building out the conditions for others to grow in their possibilities and competencies, no matter their circumstances;
To do this I need personal confidence in myself and skills to communicate and develop complexity in organisation;
I recognise the three essential conditions of security, graciousness and ordered freedom;
I recognise the energy in all of us for self improvement and development;
I recognise how life’s circumstances at home and in institutions can cause this enthusiasm to be dissipated;
I recognise how caring adults can, by supportive conversations, source a stronger sense of coherence about life, and self resilience.
I understand that positive feedback is more beneficial than negativity.
